October 9, 1949 - August 25, 2024
August Guenter Gerdei (Gus) passed away suddenly on August 25th after a long illness at the age of 74. He was born on October 9, 1949 in Eisenerz, Austria. The family is deeply saddened by his sudden death, although he faced failing health over the last several years.
Gus was the owner of the Bavarian Inn and the Back Eddy Pub in Terrace, BC for over 49 years. The Inn was Gus's pride, joy and life's work. He poured his heart and soul into the business which was evident to his devoted staff and patrons.
In addition to owning the Bavarian Inn, Gus enjoyed travel, skeet shooting, was an avid golfer, and of course Tennis, his fondest leisure activity. He was a generous man and invited anyone who enjoyed the game to enjoy the tennis court on his property. While he sadly could no longer play, he found pleasure watching others playing the game.
Walking his precious Corgi, Fuji, was another activity he loved.
Gus spent his early life in Eisenerz, Austria, beginning a 3-year cook's apprenticeship in Leoben, Austria, at the age of 15.
At the age of 19, he emigrated to Canada and not long after, found himself in Vancouver, where he met Heli, his future wife and soulmate. Shortly after, they made their way to Terrace, where they purchased the Bavarian Inn and through many struggles along the way, they made the Inn a success.
Gus is survived by his brother Frederick (Lori), his sister Hilde (Werner), his nephews Christoper, Oliver, Thorsten and Michael, along with his nieces, Iris, Liesl and Pam.
Gus was predeceased by his parents and his wife, Heli.
The family wishes to thank his staff at the Bavarian Inn for their many years of devoted service. It is greatly appreciated.
We would also like to acknowledge and thank his many Doctors, especially Dr. Fourie and the kind, caring staff at the Dialysis unit at Mills Memorial Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, please support your local charity or the Mills Memorial Hospital. Cremation has taken place.
A small memorial gathering will take place on Sunday, September 1, 2024 at 2 pm upstairs at the Bavarian Inn.
