An arsonist has been sentenced for two blazes in one day late last year, one of which destroyed a vehicle.

Constant Lavoie was handed a three-year sentence with three years of probation to follow in provincial court on June 26.

He had spent 244 days in jail while waiting for his case to go through the court system.

Credit for time served was given at 1.5 days for each day served, which totalled 366 days, leaving him two years less one day of jail time left to serve.

On Oct. 26, 2016, Terrace RCMP were called to a residence on the 3600 block of Old Lakelse Lake Dr. shortly after midnight.

Police discovered a white Chevrolet Suburban parked in a driveway with its rear passenger tire fully engulfed in flames.

Police retrieved a fire extinguisher from the RCMP vehicle and a second one from the homeowner and put the fire out.

Shortly after 2 a.m. the same day, police were called back to the residence when a report was received that the same man responsible for the fire earlier in the night was lurking around the property.

Upon arrival, police observed a green 2003 Ford Windstar parked in a neighbouring unit fully engulfed in flames.

The homeowner was evacuated and the Thornhill Fire Department put out the fire.

Investigation led police to a nearby unit and Lavoie was arrested, charged with two counts of arson and held in custody.
