Terrace RCMP will only observe pot smoke-in

Today's event is being organized by local millionaire pot advocate Bob Erb

TERRACE RCMP will be keeping an eye on the smoke-in organized by local millionaire pot advocate Bob Erb this afternoon, but won't be breaking up what they're calling a demonstration.

Our position is that this is an annual event held in a peaceful manner across Canada,” said Terrace RCMP media relations and community policing Const. Angela Rabut of the event starting at 4 p.m. on the hill right below the Sportsplex.

Although marijuana is an illegal drug in Canada, the RCMP exercises discretion when it comes to this event.”

There will be an increased police presence, officers will monitor the protest and will act if it's deemed necessary for public safety, she added.

We recognize and respect the right of individuals and organizations to demonstrate peacefully so we're viewing this as a demonstration,” said Rabut.

This decision by RCMP here came in response to numerous calls from the public.

We've had quite a few comments from the public who are not happy [for Terrace] to be known as a pot town and also from the trades fair because it's a family event,” Rabut said.

Smoke-ins in favour of pot legalization take place across the country every April 20. This will be the first such one held in Terrace.
