ONE of the more visible RCMP officers at the detachment here has a new job.

As of Feb. 14, 2017, Constable Angela Rabut is leaving her post as the detachment's community relations/media relations officer to become its First Nations policing officer.

“I felt it was a good opportunity and it was time for a change,” said Rabut in adding she was approached by Inspector Syd Lecky, the detachment's commanding officer.

Her new position means extensive contact with the Kitsumkalum and Kitselas First Nations.

In many ways Rabut will be doing the same kind of community policing as she is doing in her current position.

“Building relationships. That's the key,” said Rabut who takes over from Constable Josh McNutt who is moving to the detachment's general investigative section.

“Some of that will be determined by meeting with the chief councillors and councils to see what they want to go with as well.”

The new position also comes with responsibility for some regular enforcement work.

“I do like catching bad guys,” said Rabut.

Rabut has spent six years as the detachment's media relations/community relations officer, accumulating a body of work that resulted in an award from the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce.

And this will be her fourth posting as a detachment's First Nations policing officer with the other postings being at other detachments prior to coming to Terrace.

Replacing Rabut as the community policing/media relations officer is Constable Crystal Evelyn.

Terrace is her first police posting and her decision to join the RCMP two years ago came after spending 13 years in the newspaper business in Ontario.

Leaving her job as a journalist wasn't an overnight decision as she had been interested in policing for some time.

“I could still be involved in the community and in something very interesting as well,” said Evelyn.

“I'm always looking for more opportunities and now I can learn more about the community that I'm in and see more of it than just going on calls,” she said.
