Terrace's Spirit Square in George Little Park has been short-listed as one of Canada's greatest places.

After almost 6,000 nominations, 26 places made the final cut in the Great Places in Canada contest, hosted by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP).

The contest is in celebration of locations special to Canadians.

“People from across the country really got involved in competing for the honour of having their special location named one of Canada’s greatest places,” said Steven Brasier, executive director for CIP.

The Spirit Square was nominated as a gathering space and a focal point for activities in the heart of downtown Terrace.

“The urban design of this space has brought a new standard for public space development,” the nomination states.

The final short-list was prepared by an expert panel of professional planners, and separated into three categories - great streets, great neighbourhoods and great public places.

The Spirit Square is under the great public places category.

A panel of judges will choose a first, second and third place winner in each of the three categories and will announce the winners on May 16.

“We’re delighted with the overwhelmingly positive response as Canadians, from coast to coast to coast, celebrated the many wonderful places in this great country,” Brasier said.
