Terrace, Kitimat each report 2 new COVID-19 cases

Kitimat’s vaccination rate leads the northwest, Terrace still lagging behind: BCCDC

Terrace and Kitimat local health areas (LHA) each reported two new COVID-19 cases for the week of July 25 to 31, as vaccination rates keep slowly rising in both jurisdictions.

The two new cases in each LHA puts them both in the 0.1 to 5 cases per 100,000 people category. The highest rate in the northwest is in the Snow Country - Stikine - Telegraph Creek LHA, which reported four new COVID-19 cases.

Nisga’a, Prince Rupert, Haida Gwaii, Upper Skeena and Smithers LHA’s all reported zero new cases.

Kitimat leads the northwest in vaccine coverage, with 87 per cent of people over the age of 12 vaccinated with at least one dose. That figure has only increased by two per cent since July 13.

Terrace’s first dose vaccination rate sits at 75 per cent, an increase of three per cent since July 13. According to the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), as of August 3, Terrace’s vaccination rate is relatively low compared to other LHAs in the northwest.

Province wide, vaccination rates for people ages 12 and older have reached 81.5 per cent for first doses and 67.9 for second doses. There have been 6,931,815 doses of COVID vaccines administered as of August 4.

According to the province, 78 per cent of new cases are in people who are unvaccinated, while 18 per cent are in people who have had just one dose.

Northern Health is holding vaccine clinics each Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Kitimat General Hospital’s multi-purpose room for booked appointments.

In Terrace, Northern Health is booking vaccine appointments at the Terrace Health Centre for first and second doses.
