A cooling centre is to open Sunday, July 7 at the Garage Community Space on Kalum St. as temperatures are predicted to reach the upper 20s and into the low 30s.
It's being organized by the city with money from the provincial emergency management and climate readiness ministry in conjunction with the Ksan Society, the Terrace and District Community Services Society and the Garage.
City communications official Sarah Artis said planning and preparations are triggered when temperatures reach 28 degrees or above over a series of days and/or when a heat warning is posted by Environment Canada.
"City bylaw officers and community safety officers as well as outreach staff from partner organizations have been checking in on the city's unsheltered and vulnerable population, and will continue to do so. They are providing water and support as needed," she said.
The Garage will open noon July 7 until 8 p.m.
The opening of a cooling location depends upon the temperature and ability to have it staffed, conditions which can change daily, Artis said.
