Terrace Church’s Food Bank (TCFB) will have a new location on Kalum St. next month.
The food bank, which had been operating out of Diary Queen building on Park Ave. for the past 15 years, ran its last distribution day from that location between Jan. 10 and Jan. 12.
Starting February, the new location for TCFB will be at 3504 Kalum St. in the building which was formerly the old Shell gas station (adjacent to the Terrace Health Unit).
Paul Moravec, the president of the board for TCFB, said the main reason the food bank is moving is because its lease agreement has come to an end.
“We were trying to find a place that serves our purpose,” said Moravec, adding the new building has a lot of “positive advantages” structurally that allows them to haul tonnes of products in and out.
The first opening of TCFB from the new building is scheduled for Feb. 7. The food bank will also have a new operating schedule and will be open every Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The TCFB is a joint effort by seven churches in the area and has been serving the community for 32 years since it was first set up in 1991. On a monthly basis, the organization serves anywhere between 300 to 325 households or 600 to 700 individuals. The program is which is strictly volunteer run, saw around 60 volunteers participate last year.
“It blows my mind that we have that kind of support from the community,” said Moravec, adding that 90 per cent of the donations come in from individuals and businesses in the community.
