A LAP by cancer survivors started the 2011 Relay for LIfe May 14 at the Skeena Junior Secondary School track.

A BEAUTIFUL spring day greeted walkers as this year's Relay of Life took place at the Skeena Junior Secondary School track May 14. From the survivors' lap at 10 am until the 10 pm luminary lap, to remember those who have passed away and to show support for those fighting cancer, the weather cooperated.

This year's total, read out by Marilyn Nenninger representing sponsor Horizon Dental Clinic just after 9 pm, amounted to $184,301.

The total will climb over the next days as more donations and contributions appear.

"This was almost exactly the same amount as last year with 100 fewer participants this year," said one of the Relay organizers during the grand total announcement.

Relay for Life, a project of the Canadian Cancer Society, has been held at the Skeena Junior track for several years.

The track, surrounding grass and school facilities all contribute to the success of the event each year.
