Slash pile near Lakelse Lake reignites due to heat

The Thornhill Fire dept. has had a busy week and Fire Chief Wes Patterson wants to remind people to double check unburnt piles.

The warm weather and high risk of fires has been keeping the Thornhill Fire Department busy.

After fighting a fire near Jackpine earlier this week, last night, Thornhill firefighters responded to a slash pile at Lakelse Lake that had reignited after it was thought to be fully extinguished.

The pile of debris sparked up again due to the warm weather and winds, explained Fire Chief Wes Patterson.

The firefighters were on the scene for an hour-and-a-half and the owner was also present with a loader to help put the fire out.

“With this warm weather, anyone who has been burning this spring should recheck any unburnt piles for possible re-ignition,” Patterson said.

He also reiterated that fire bans are in effect as of 4:00 p.m. today, and so far, people have been respecting the ban, Patterson said.

The City of Terrace released a notice today prohibiting all campfires within city limits “to help prevent human-caused wildfires.” The ban will remain in place until Sept. 15 or until otherwise notified.

The prohibition does not include cooking stoves nor does it apply to portable campfire apparatuses. Campfires in the Ferry Island Campground are also excluded from the prohibition.

There are currently 12 significant wildfires that are currently burning in B.C. including the Chelaslie Arm wildfire that is estimated at over 20-thousand hectares and has resulted in evacuations of the area.

If any smoke or fires are spotted make sure to report them by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
