UPDATE: Terrace rafter killed in Clore River accident

The body of a missing Terrace rafter has been located on the Clore River east of the city.

Late Sunday morning Kitimat RCMP received a SOS message from an Inreach Device geo-tagged to the remote location. A message indicated two men had capsized their raft, and while one managed to swim ashore the other was swept away.

Terrace Ground and Swiftwater Rescue was immediately deployed with air, water and ground support. They located the first rafter on shore. Search teams found the second man deceased down stream in the water. He was 41 years old.

Both men were reported to be wearing life jackets and helmets.

Police have not released the victim’s name.

Kitimat RCMP are asking the public to exercise caution in remote rivers like the Clore where steep, rocky canyons offer little chance to turn around or exit.

“Kitimat RCMP understand that losing a relative, friend, co-worker unexpectedly is not easy and those suffering from such loss are encouraged to reach out and speak to family or friends,” says a spokesperson. “Kitimat RCMP Victim Services can also provide access to services and programs available to help someone cope with grief.
