Four portable classrooms have now been set up at École Jack-Cook immediately adjacent to the school’s building. The classrooms, each of two single-wide units joined together, are needed to handle a growing student population and to make room for additional programming.

“The purpose of the units was to make space for Grade 7/8 students, to have a room dedicated to the library and music and to have a room for special education,” said Pascale Cyr, who handles communications for the Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, the stand alone School District 93 that has French language schools in 47 locations throughout the province.

Cyr said the Grade 1 to Grade 8 school has experienced a 39 per cent student population increase in the past three years. From 44 students in 2019, the school population increased to 52 students in 2020, to 59 students in 2021 and to 61 students this year.

There are three schools belonging to School District 93 — École Jack-Cook here in Terrace, La Grande-Ourse in Smithers and Franco-Nord in Prince George.

City of Terrace permit records place the portables’ cost at $700,000. Money provided comes from the provincial education ministry. The school building is owned by School District 82 and is leased to School District 93.
