Police are asking the public for information in regards to an incident where a dog was left to die in a diaper box in the woods near the Copper River east of Thornhill.

“We estimate the dog had been left for at least two days. He was still alive, but barely. He had been left to die in the woods in a box,” says Cst Aaron Muzzerall of the RCMP’s West Pacific Traffic Services section based in Terrace, B.C.

On September 13th at approximately 4:30 PM police were conducting a traffic stop on Hwy 16 when they were flagged down by a person.

The person said that while out walking their dog near the Copper River they had located a diaper box with a small dog abandoned inside. Police transported the dog to Kitimat where it was seen by a veterinarian.

He was severely dehydrated and suffering from an eye infection. The vet also discovered other health complications.

In the end, the decision was made to have the dog euthanized, said Terrace RCMP in a statement.

“An animal should never be treated this badly and have to suffer like this. Owning a pet comes with it a responsibility to take care of it,” the statement continued.

If you have information about this crime contact the Terrace RCMP at (250)638-7400 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers by telephone at 1-800-222-TIPS, online at www.terracecrimestoppers.ca or by texting TERRACE plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).
