POLICE ARE focussing on vehicle defects this month after spending last month catching several drivers using cell phones or other devices while driving.
During the Distracted Drivers campaign, North District West Traffic Services officers, also known as the highway patrol, issued 62 fines to drivers using an electronic device while driving on roadways from Houston to Prince Rupert, said Const. Derek Nicolai of North District West Traffic Services here in Terrace.
"The goal of this campaign was to reduce the number of collisions and therefore the number of fatalities and/or injuries on our roadways," said Nicolai in a release today.
Officers caught these drivers during individual traffic stops and roadblocks and police remind motorists to use a hands free device or pull over to the side of the road before answering or making a phone call.
During March, police will focus on vehicle defects, which includes window tint (film) on the front driver or passenger windows, no front licence plate and burned out or damaged headlights.
The strategic priorities of North District West Traffic Services are to target offences pertaining to seatbelts, cell phones and impaired drivers to reduce the number of collisions causing death or injury.
