Northwest First Nations to receive more land

Provincial aboriginal relations minister to attending Kitselas, Kitsumkalum ceremonies

Two northwestern BC First Nations are to receive more land as part of an eventual package of land claims treaties with the federal and provincial governments.

The Kitselas and Kitsumkalum First Nations already have tentative agreements in principle with the federal and provincial governments covering land, cash, self government and resource control and the addition of other lands is meant to further provide each with an economic base.

Those tentative agreements in principle were initialled by land claims negotiators for all sides last week and will now be taken to Kitselas and Kitsumkalum members for approval.

Provincial aboriginal relations minister Ida Chong is due in the Terrace area tomorrow to sign off on the addition of the supplemental lands.

She'll first be attending a ceremony hosted by the Kitsumkalum and then one hosted by the Kitselas.

The Kitselas First Nation is to vote Feb. 20 and the Kitsumkalum First Nation in early April.

Chong will also be attending a combined Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce and BC Liberal Party meet and greet in the late afternoon.
