Unspent money from the city’s budget last year has been combined with a budgeted amount this year to repave the stretch of road from the bottom of Lanfear Hill to the intersection of Kenney and Hwy16.

Crews were on the site Aug. 25, beginning with grinding up and removing the existing asphalt layer which had been in need of replacement. Crews then reworked the subsurface in preparation for a new layer.

City official Alisa Thompson said the project has a budget of $249,639 — $150,000 from this year’s asphalt overlay section of the city budget and $99,639 that was unspent last year.

She said last year’s unspent amount came from challenges faced in lining up a milling machine which is the machine that grinds up the existing asphalt. In some circumstances it is then mixed with new material and laid back down.

City crews are hauling material and providing project management and R.A.P. Tech Milling, Wiebe Construction and Terrace Paving have been brought in for other aspects of the project.

Earlier this summer asphalt on a section of road in the horseshoe was also ground up and a new layer put down. That was on the block of Straume running in front of the REM Lee Theatre and Caledonia Secondary.
