The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a high stream flow advisory for the Skeena and Nass Rivers. Minor flooding in low lying areas is expected but no major flooding is forecasted at this time. The river levels are expected to remain elevated with potential for small increases in water level through the weekend.
Potential flooding along the Skeena and its tributaries continues to be weather dependent. The delayed snow melt remains a concern. There is a potential for further rises in river levels should higher temperatures (30 degrees or higher) or heavy rains occur, these conditions are not in the short range forecasts.
Residents in low-lying areas, subject to flooding, should be aware of this risk and take precautions. Properties less than 20 feet above the natural boundary of these rivers are within a flood plain and are at risk. Property owners are also reminded that it is their responsibility to take preventative measures to ensure that damage from flooding is minimized. Property owners in flood-plain areas should flood proof their structures, including:
Moving indoor and outdoor items to higher ground.
Relocating hazardous materials such as cleaners and pesticides to higher ground to prevent water contamination.
Unplugging and disconnecting electrical items at risk.
Gathering important papers in water tight containers and keeping a record of valuables in a safe place.
Constructing sandbag dikes or berms to protect homes and business.
Ensuring an appropriate supply of medications, including oxygen and any other necessary items are on hand in the event roads become impassable.
Making arrangements for pets and livestock to be moved to safer locations.
Finding alternative accommodations in the event of evacuations.
All Residents should have supplies at hand to be completely self sufficient for at least 72 hours.
