TERRACE RCMP inspector commended his officers on their calm handling of an incident where a man with a knife threatened police officers trying to arrest him.

On Saturday, June 29, shortly after 8 a.m., Terrace RCMP responded to a disturbance complaint at the local men's shelter.

A 33-year-old man had fled with a lap top computer after assaulting one of the shelter employees, said police in a release today, July 2.

Located outside a nearby strip mall, the suspect then brandished a knife when approached by police, but he was eventually taken into custody without anyone being injured, said police.

This was a very dangerous situation for the public and our members, who demonstrated great restraint and composure, says Inspector Dana Hart, the Officer in Charge of the Terrace RCMP.

No police officer wants to use deadly force, but in this situation it was a very real possibility.

The man is held in custody to appear in court today.

Police are recommending charges of assault, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, possession of stolen property and possession of break and enter tools.

Police will also be requesting a mental health assessment.
