The corner of Lazelle Ave. and Emerson St. is home to a unique new statue.
With the help of a City of Terrace crew, B.C. artist Karl Mattson installed the tall, metal fixture on Oct. 21. The sculpture was funded by the Skeena Salmon Arts Festival Society and features a raven perched at the top of a tree. Salmon ‘swim’ around a large solid rock at the centre of the piece.
Mattson, a self-taught artist who lives just north of Dawson Creek, said that the mostly uses salvaged steel in his work.
He titled the sculpture “Element.”
“I’ve always wanted to work with stone and steel, so this was kinda my first try at that, drilling through stone and I like the idea,” he said. “It’s basically just about the elements, nature, animals.”
“I like the idea of potential energy, you know heavy things being held up by things that have been processed out of the same material.”
