Protesters thronged in the sunshine at Brolly Square today to voice opposition to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Project.

Part of a national campaign called “Defend our Climate, Defend our Communities”, the rally was one of several held in cities and towns across Canada, and drew a large crowd of picketers showing messages drawn on bright signs.

The messages point to issues that area residents have with the project, one of the main ones being the threat it poses to salmon and other marine stock.

The federal Joint Review Panel, a committee that was charged with assessing the impacts of the Enbridge project through community engagement, is poised to present their recommendations through the National Energy Board sometime in mid-December.

These most recent protests come in the wake of a renewed publicity campaign on the part of Enbridge, as well as negotiations between B.C. and Alberta over the conditions under which B.C. would allow pipeline expansion to the coast.
