Students from Kitimat and Terrace are gearing up for the provincial championships in robotics.

Students in grades seven to 12 have been finalizing and submitting engineering portfolios, presenting teams to a panel of judges and on Feb. 5 they ended their busy week with a scrimmage that was hosted and live-streamed from Mount Elizabeth Middle Secondary School (MEMSS).

The two teams representing the robotics program run out of MEMSS in Kitimat and Caledonia Secondary school in Terrace, are teams 19769 (Sentinels) and 19767 (The Frog Series) respectively. The teams, comprised of two lead teacher mentors and 16 students, have been planning, designing, building, wiring and programming their robots since the school year began in September.

Students are taking part in the FIRST Tech Challenge where they will be competing in a game called Freight Frenzy. The game is played on a 12 foot by 12 foot square field and there are two alliances each comprised of two robots. Robots will then interact with various game elements to score points.

Two students from the Sentinels have been nominated for the Dean’s List award, which is a leadership award offered by For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST). The championship competition will be taking place in Vancouver on Feb. 26.
