Jogger dies in Stewart

STEWART RCMP and BC Coroners Service continue to investigate the death of a young Pitt Meadows man.

STEWART RCMP and the BC Coroners Service continue their investigation into the death of a young Pitt Meadows man who died while jogging in Stewart near the Alaska border.

At 6:45 p.m. on August 1, police responded to a call of a man who had fallen near the Canada/USA Border on Highway 37A, reported RCMP in a release the evening of Aug. 3.

Upon arrival, the unconscious 24-year-old man was found laying on the rocky ocean shore, approximately 30 feet below the edge of the roadway, said police.

First Aid was provided by a witness, passersby and paramedics, who quickly arrived on scene, said the release.

With assistance of a crane truck and basket, the male was lifted back onto the roadway and then taken to the Stewart Hospital by ambulance, added police. The man died as a result of his injuries, reported police.

From information gathered from witnesses, it appears that the male was jogging west on the highway, when he observed a large truck approaching behind him and crossed the road to avoid it, said police.

He jumped over a concrete barrier on the opposite side of the highway, perhaps not aware of the steep drop on the other immediate side of the barrier, said police.

He fell approximately 30 feet onto the rocks below, as the tide was out, the release continued.

By request of the deceased male’s family, his name is not being released at this time, said RCMP.

Alcohol or drugs were not deemed to be factors and foul play is not suspected, said police.

Stewart RCMP thanks all those at the scene who provided assistance.

Special thanks also to Soucie Construction for use of their equipment to assist in extricating the male.
