Houston homicide suspect remanded in custody

A Houston man accused of the second degree murder of Elija Dumont Nov. 10 has been remanded in custody until Dec. 3.

William Griffin appeared by phone from RCMP cells in Houston before a judge in Smithers Provincial Court this morning.

Linda Locke, QC, acting as agent for defence attorney Joseph McCarthy, requested the adjournment to allow Griffin time to consult counsel.

Prosecutor Nina Purewal consented to the December date, but advised the Court the Crown would not have disclosure ready by that time as the police investigation is ongoing.

She requested, and was granted, an order that Griffin have no contact with a number of named persons who cannot be disclosed under a publication ban.

Griffin was located and arrested in Terrace on Nov. 15 and was charged with second-degree murder of the 23-year-old Dumont.

Police said they were called to a residence on the 2100 Block of Cataline Court at 4:18 p.m. upon receiving a report of a shooting.

Front line officers immediately attended the scene, where they found Dumont deceased and confirmed a homicide had occurred.

RCMP say the two men were known to each other and this is an isolated incident. E Division RCMP Major Crime Section is still investigating the incident.

Griffin will be transferred to Prince George Correctional Centre from where he is scheduled to appear by video in Smithers court on Dec. 3.
