A free program to train locals for work on major industrial construction projects such as the LNG Canada terminal and the Coastal GasLink pipeline will soon be available in the Northwest.
The program will provide a number of safety certifications including first aid, WHMIS, COVID-19 in the workplace, rigging and hoisting, working at height and confined space, among others. There will also be a $200 allowance per trainee for purchase of work boots, hard hats and safety vests.
The training will be held in-person, with a limit of 20 people due to COVID-19 safety requirements. To be eligible for the training, one must be underemployed or unemployed.
The first session will be held in Terrace from Feb. 8 to Feb. 19, and the second session will be held in Kitimat from March 1 to March 12. Additional sessions may become available if there is sufficient interest.
The program is fully subsidized by the B.C. government so there is zero cost for trainees.
Aspect Safety, a Northwest-based safety training organization, secured the provincial funding and is hosting the training sessions.
