CREWS from the Terrace and Thornhill fire departments are fighting a blaze this hour in downtown Terrace which has destroyed a building containing the Northcoast Angler business.
The two-storey building, one of the older structures in the downtown core, is at the corner of Kalum and Lakelse Ave.
Thick grey and black smoke is pouring from the structure as at least two hoses are being directed at the blaze.
Speaking from the scene, Terrace fire chief John Klie said crews responded to a 911 call shortly before 6 a.m.
“As you can see Thornhill has its ladder truck here and we have our main vehicle,” said Klie.
More equipment is being brought in, he added.
The main floor contains the angling supply business while the upper floor is mostly storage.
The fire is being contained to the building.
There's a vacant lot just to the south of the building and an alleyway on the building's west side has helped prevent the fire's spread west down Lakelse Ave.
“That's going to be a good fire break, a separation,” said Klie of the alleyway.
Terrace RCMP vehicles have blocked off the 4600 Block of Lakelse Ave. and surrounding streets.
The Terrace Fire Department and the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department have an agreement in which each assists the other when required.
