Fire ban in effect

Due to dry conditions and consistent heat a fire ban has been put into effect starting today.

A ban on campfires, open fires and other sources has now begun and will stay in effect until September 15, or until otherwise noted.

The thirty-plus degree heat felt this weekend, although beautiful weather for the beach, has created undesirable conditions for burnings and campfires.

The Ministry of Forests' prohibitions cover the Nadina Forest District, the Skeena Stikine Forest District and Coast Mountain Forest District.

Category 2 and 3 open fires, campfires, outdoor stoves, fireworks, tiki torches and sky lanterns have all be prohibited. However, cooking stoves and BBQs using propane or briquettes are still in the clear.

The fire ban covers all B.C. Parks, Crown land and private lands however it does not apply within city limits that are serviced by a fire department, but the Ministry recommends calling local authorities for restrictions before starting a fire.

Those caught breaking prohibition are subject to a fine up to $345. If the case goes to court than the fines increase to $100,000 and a year in prison.
