DriveAble testing hits home

After local calls to the province to bring a senior's driving test closer to home, a new DriveAble location has been added in Terrace

A senior's driving test will no longer involve a 600 kilometre drive for Terrace area residents.

After a push from local seniors' groups and government bodies to bring DriveAble testing closer to home earlier this year, the province announced today that Terrace has been added to the list of locations the test is available to be administered.

The DriveAble test is a two-part test involving a touch-screen computer portion and in car assessment. It's mandatory only to those whose doctors recommend it based on concerns for someone's cognitive ability as it relates to driving. This test is different from the driver medical examination reports that all drivers over 80 years old have to complete with their doctors every two years.

Formerly, the closest location for the DriveAble test was Prince George, meaning anyone in the northwest whose doctor recommended the test had to make the trip or face losing their driver's license. But now, Terrace has become the central location for this part of the region.

The closest testing location east of Terrace is still Prince George, with no testing location to the west.

Terrace was among nine other B.C. communities added to the list of testing locations, bringing the total number in B.C. to 28 from 15.

The test will be offered through Terrace's Service B.C. office.
