Terrace RCMP is warning the community to be aware of a fraudster claiming to be with BC Hydro.
On Nov. 9 police say two separate reports were made of phone calls from a person claiming to be from BC Hydro, demanding payment on overdue accounts and threatening to disconnect the scam victim’s electricity.
In both cases police say the fraudster directed victims to make payments by going to certain locations.
BC Hydro does not collect credit card or bank account information over the phone, by text or email. The company also does not accept payment from pre-paid cash or credit cards, or bitcoin ATM.
If a customer is in doubt of the authenticity of a phone call, text or email, they should call BC Hydro at 1-800-224-9376 or check their MyHydro account online.
