The Biggest Loser 2011 Challenge has kicked off in Terrace, and challengers are ready to be tried and tested in their commitment to a healthier lifestyle.

The Biggest Loser is a four-month weight loss challenge, open to people of all ages and physical and financial situations.

This year the challenge has 67 men and women from Terrace and Kitimat with ages ranging from 19-59, and weights ranging from 143 lbs to more than 400 lbs.

Weigh-ins took place on May 1st. They will take continue once a month for June, July and August, with the remaining three weigh-ins operating as elimination rounds, until the September weigh-in when a winner will be determined from a final 10.

During each weigh-in the person who lost the most weight in pounds for the month will be rewarded with a monthly rewards package to be provided by various sponsors, as well as immunity in the next round of eliminations.

“The purpose of the challenge is to encourage and motivate people to loose weight and get healthier through a new and clean life style change,” said organizer Cara Devaney. “It’s not just about loosing weight though… it’s about stamina, and endurance, it’s about health risks and issues and it’s so much about self-esteem and self-confidence.

“I strive to provide the motivation and know-how to achieve these goals, but the challengers are fully responsible for taking advantage of it,” Devaney said.

Devaney said she is finding the attitudes of this year’s group enthusiasm contagious and she is already proud of the contenders.
