College determines layoff numbers

The college last month said it needed to cut employees to balance its budget

NORTHWEST COMMUNITY College now says it needs to cut more than 30 positions to balance its budget.

Faced with a deficit of at least $1.6 million, college president Denise Henning last month warned employees that layoffs need to take place.

In a press release this morning, the college said the 31.49 positions will be cut across its coverage area.

"Over the next two weeks, Consultation Committees comprised of union leadership and administration will meet to consider alternatives to individual layoffs and explore possible options," said this morning's release.

The union that represents mostly the college's university credit courses has already filed a request with the provincial Labour Relations Board to stop any layoffs pending more information on the college's financial picture.
