City to regulate pesticide use

The use of cosmetic pesticides in Terrace is now restricted.

City council unanimously passed a bylaw regulating the use of pesticides for non-essential purposes in the municipality during a meeting April 11.

This is for when pesticides are used to enhance the appearance of private lawns and gardens.

Local members of the Canadian Cancer Society had approached city council Feb. 14 to ask for a ban on the use of cosmetic pesticides, saying that there is evidence that supports a link between pesticides and cancer incidences.

The bylaw recognizes that residents are concerned about the non-essential use of pesticides and the risk pesticides pose to the environment, and states that no one shall use or apply a cosmetic pesticide to maintain outdoor trees, shrubs, flowers, other ornamental plants on private or public land.

Tickets for offences can run from $100 to $2,000.
