Newly-elected City of Terrace mayor and council took their oaths of office at city hall Nov. 7 following a ceremonious march into the room to the sound of bagpipes and accompanied by RCMP in Red Serge.

Mayor Sean Bujtas called the inaugural meeting to order followed by words of welcome, blessings and prayers from Sharon Bryant of the Kitsumkalum First Nation.

Also present were Kitselas First Nation Chief Councillor Glenn Bennett, MLA for Skeena Ellis Ross and outgoing Terrace mayor of Terrace Carol Leclerc.

It was a first oath of office for councillors Chris Apps, Inder Dhillon and Sarah Zimmerman who are new to council. Councillors James Cordeiro, Brian Downie and Dave Gordon are returning along with Bujtas who was acclaimed on Oct. 15 as the only candidate for the position.

As a first order of business after swearing in council chose Bujtas and Cordeiro as directors to represent the city at the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine (RDKS) board for one year.

Because of a population increase the city gained an extra vote at the regional district table. Those votes are split between the two directors, with council assigning four to Cordeiro and three to Bujtas. Coun. Zimmerman and Coun. Gordon and were appointed alternate directors for Bujtas and Cordeiro respectively.
