The newly renovated space at 3304 Kalum, now called The Garage, will host an Outreach Information BBQ on July 15.

The event in Terrace is a collaborative initiative including a number of community organizations that provide outreach and support services to vulnerable persons, Linda Stevens, the city’s social development coordinator said.

The walk-in Outreach BBQ will be held late afternoon onward and is open to all community members to attend.

Northern Health, and several social service agencies will be partnering with the City of Terrace in to provide information o trauma-informed practices, harm reduction, Naloxone training, as well as the different outreach services provided by organizations in and around the city.

“It is intended to provide an opportunity to bring community together, showcase The Garage as a emerging community resource, and to share information about the organizations, and evidence informed practices that organizations engage in, that support our vulnerable and street involved persons,” Stevens said.

Stevens said the City facilitated an initial meeting to bring together organizations to begin discussing day activities for persons who are street involved. “Within that discussion an idea bubbled up to further inform and engage the broader community in understanding the work that the many service organizations do in terms of supporting the needs of persons experiencing homelessness in our community,” Stevens said.

Sharon Bandstra, who bought The Garage, formerly a gas station, earlier this year to develop it as a community resource centre, said she was pleased to facilitate the event at the space. With a soup kitchen and food bank already operating in the space, events like the Outreach BBQ are giving shape to the vision she had for the venue, she added.
