Bird caused power outage in Terrace on Dec. 7

Thirty-six customers affected, including Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Save-On-Foods

Several businesses in downtown Terrace lost power for over an hour on the afternoon of Dec. 7.

The outage affected east of Greig Ave., west of Emerson St., north of Keith Ave. and south of Lazelle Ave., from 1:51 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., according to BC Hydro.

Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Save-On-Foods were among the 36 customers affected by the outage.

BC Hydro reported the cause of the outage to be a bird that had contacted the wires. Several Facebook users in Terrace said that a crow was the type of bird in question.

“Yeah I saw the poor thing under the power line of the overpass, might’ve been the one. RIP, that was a HUGE bird,” said Meleigha Stephens in a comment on the Terrace Community Bulletin Board on Facebook.

BC Hydro recommends that people prepare a 72 hour emergency kit and create an emergency plan, because winter conditions like wind and snow can knock out power for extended periods of time.
