Local athletes shine at seniors games

Whether individually, in pairs or in teams, Terrace and area athletes demonstrated their sporting talent at the provincial 2024 55+ BC Games held in mid-September in Salmon Arm.

Beginning with individual achievements, cyclist Deborah Helsdon won one gold medal and two silver medals, cyclist Trudy Rafuse also won one gold and two silver.

Gordon Moss won a gold and two bronzes in bowling and Holly Cowman won a silver. Roland Lagace won a gold in bowling, Greg Cowman a silver and Brian Turner a bronze.

The lone golfer from the Terrace area was Ruth Hidber an she won a silver while Bruce Miller brought home a silver in horseshoes. Tom Logan won a bronze in archery.

In the equestrian competitions, Alice Sexton topped off a six gold-medal performance by adding two silver medals.

Rick Tabata won a silver in single men's pickleball competition and Shelly Haynes-Marrelli won a silver in single women's pickleball.

In team events, Team A bowlers Gordon (Ted) Moss, Christine Olson, Carol Campbell, Roland Lagace and Greg Cowman won gold for most points overage and Team B bowlers Bob Price, Deborah Burkett, Holly Cowman, Albertine Lagace, Brian Turner and Alfreda Price won bronze in the same category.

The horseshoe duo of Bruce Miller and Mavis Norquay claimed a silver in mixed doubles over the age of 55.

Jeany De Wit and Riaan De Wit won a bronze medal in a mixed pickleball category while Rick Tabata and Caron Knight from Nanaimo won gold in a doubles pickleball category.

Rick Tabata and Riaan De Wit then claimed a silver in the men's 60-64 doubles category.

Also competing at the games was cyclist Rudi Peters.

Bowler Greg Cowman noted that local seniors are able to hone and enjoy the sport at the Terrace Bowling Centre on Lazelle Ave. just west of city hall and the fire hall.
