Thornhill Transfer Station's public hours are being extended for the next four months.

The pilot project will increase the days it is open from three days per week to five. The operating hours will now be Mondays from noon to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The station plays a crucial role in managing the Greater Terrace area's waste, receiving both garbage and selected recyclables.

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine has received numerous requests to extend the hours. A survey conducted by the solid waste staff of the RDKS showed 85 per cent of residents were unhappy with the previous public hours, and 96 per cent supported extending the hours.

The need for extended hours was rooted in public safety, convenience, reducing illegal dumping, and aligning with the district's Solid Waste Management Plan.

If the pilot project is well-received and works out financially, a proposal to make the shift permanent will be presented to the RDKS Plan Monitory Advisory Committee.
