On the morning of Monday, Jan. 27, the Terrace Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 4500 Block of Olson Avenue. The blaze was contained to a garage on the property.

An adult woman was in the garage and the Fire Department was able to remove her. She was taken to the hospital by Emergency Health Services. Despite life saving measures taken, the woman was declared deceased at the hospital.

At this time, Terrace RCMP believe the cause of the fire to be suspicious. The investigation is active and ongoing, but police do not believe there is any risk to the general public. The Fire Department will continue to work closely with the police on the investigation, according to a Jan. 30 statement.

Anyone with information on the matter is asked to call the Terrace RCMP at 250-638-7400.

"We would like to remind all residents of the importance of fire safety, regular inspections, and keeping living spaces free of excess clutter that can exacerbate fire risks," wrote Joel Brousson, Terrace Fire Chief in a Jan. 30 statement.
