Terrace's Petro Canada was recognized as one of British Columbia's top collection sites for used oil and antifreeze materials in 2024.
The Keith Ave. facility was celebrated at Interchange Recycling's sixth annual Top Collector Awards, which celebrate recycling centres across the province. They were ranked 19th.
The facility is run by the family-operated Jepson Petroleum Ltd., a licensed fuels distributor of Petro-Canada™, a Suncor Business.
"We put a lot of hard work into trying to be good social citizens here," said Kyle Jepson, vice president of sales for Jepson Petroleum Ltd.
"All of our dedicated collection sites across the province contribute to keeping our local communities stronger and healthier, thanks to their ongoing commitment to keeping oil, filters, antifreeze and their containers, out of landfills,” said Jenn Robson, director of operations for Interchange Recycling.
Facilities were determined to be top collectors based on: the amount of used oil and antifreeze collected, the number of years participating in Interchange Recycling’s public return facility program, as well as their continual support of Interchange Recycling and other recycling stewardship related programs.
It is important to recycle used oil and antifreeze materials because it helps keep hazardous waste out of landfills and protects local ecosystems.
"Used oil can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products. Additionally, used oil filters contain metal, which is recycled into metal products like rebar, nails, and wire. Used oil and antifreeze containers are recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs. Used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze," wrote Interchange Recycling in a news release.
Interchange Recycling is a collaborative, not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of used lubricating oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers in B.C.
