Terrace's first ever Law Enforcement Torch Run was held on June 7 in support of Special Olympics BC, raising funds and awareness.

Special Olympics athletes, members of the Terrace RCMP and supporting agencies and community members gathered at the Terrace RCMP parking lot where opening ceremonies began at 11:00 a.m.

Approximately 35 participants did a loop of the Xpilaxha trail under the heat, running or walking 5 km until they reached back at the parking lot, where a BBQ with burgers, hot dogs and cold beverages was waiting for them.

Special guest, Dave Jephson, brought his original 2010 Vancouver Olympics torch to share with athletes, giving them all a turn to carry this special torch as they completed their run.

Prizes were awarded to top fundraisers and other prizes were raffled off. In total, $2150 was raised for Special Olympics BC.

"I’d like to see this event become a regular occurrence in Terrace to continue supporting such a great organization,” said Cst Kelly Cates of the Terrace RCMP.

“I can’t thank business owners enough for their generosity to this event,” she added. “Without them this torch run just would not have been the same.”
