Staged accident looks very real

Just in time for the grad season, a staged two-vehicle collision complete with more than 20 first responders and 10 emergency vehicles filled a section of the Caledonia Secondary School parking lot just before lunch May 26.

Just in time for the grad season, a staged two-vehicle collision complete with more than 20 first responders and 10 emergency vehicles filled a section of the Caledonia Secondary School parking lot just before lunch May 26.

A mostly subdued crowd of students gathered to watch events unfold in which student actors in realistic make up were slumped on the ground or around a red sedan entangled with an SUV that was on its side.

Terrace RCMP officers were first on the scene followed by firefighters from the Terrace Fire Department and the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department and, in short order, paramedics with the provincial ambulance service.

While firefighters quickly secured the vehicles and then used a Jaws of Life to free those trapped, paramedics and police officers tended to the injured.

One officer quickly escorted a teen driver away from the main scene where he was questioned, a breath test administered, arrested and handcuffed before being placed in the back of a police vehicle.

The staged incident was intended to remind students and others of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
