As of Sept. 12, the BC Wildfire Service has lifted its ban on campfires and open fires the Northwest Fire Centre, which includes the Skeena, Cassiar, Bulkley and Nadina fire zones. Forest use restrictions are still in place.
Fire danger ratings have dropped in the region due to recent rainfall and cooler temperatures, and the public is advised to exercise caution with any outdoor burning or campfire use.
In Terrace, only campfires that are no larger than 0.5 metres tall and 0.5 metres wide are allowed within city limits, along with smokehouses and barbecue pits. Fireworks, burn barrels and larger open fires are still restricted.
The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine follows provincial protocols, meaning the use of burn barrels, fireworks, sky lanterns, air curtain burners and binary exploding targets will be permitted.
Anyone planning to burn a pile larger than two metres high by three metres wide, or conduct a grass burn larger than 0.2 hectares (Category 3 fires), must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1 888-797-1717.
