Careers day attracts crowd of students

"With over 20 engaging, hands-on stations, students had a blast exploring and learning about different professions and trades," said Kim Hoekstra

Terrace and area elementary students spent May 29 at the former Thornhill Junior Secondary School, now reshaped as School District 82's Northwest Trades and Employment Training Centre, experiencing a wide variety of careers and occupations.

More than 230 Grade 6 and Grade 7 students from Skeena Middle School, Kitsumkalum, Centennial Christian, Kitwanga Elementary and New Hazelton Elementary asked questions and spoke with presenters, said School District 82 careers coordinator Kim Hoekstra.

"We are so happy with the success of the 2025 Maker Day event in Terrace. With over 20 engaging, hands-on stations, students had a blast exploring and learning about different professions and trades," she said.

A group of 60 Caledonia students volunteered to run and support stations as well as taking photographs.

Those companies, services and agencies taking part included the Thornhill Volunteer Fire Department, Skeena Wild, Trowel Trades Training Association, Elite/DKI, Piping Industry College, Terrace RCMP, Progressive Ventures, Westernjet, BC Construction Association, Technicon, A & J Roofing, Acuren, Hartman Electrical, LNG Canada, Coast Mountain College, CDN Controls, BC Emergency Health Services, and RONA Terrace.

Hoekstra said school district food program manager Shawn Wilson and secretary treasurer executive assistant Lindsay Harder also assisted.

The program ran for five years prior to COVID when it focused on Grade 5 students. This is its third year since COVID and the switch to students in Grades 6 and 7.
