To the editor:

How many people over the years have been helped by Ron and Mavis Ramsey and the Helping Hands of Terrace Society?

I was thinking of that the other day given the high cost of medicine and medical care nowadays.

Ron and Mavis, and others with Helping Hands, raised many thousands of dollars over the years through the collection and sorting of recyclable bottles and containers to help seniors who could not otherwise afford prescription medications.

The proceeds were placed with pharmacies in the region. If a pharmacist saw a person who could not afford the cost of medication, they used the proceeds. As a result, many people experienced better health outcomes.

The society also helped people who had other medical expenses.

For their efforts Ron and Mavis were named volunteers of the year in 2023 by the Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce and, in 2020. were presented with Meritorious Service Medals by the Governor General of Canada.

Mavis has since passed away and Ron is in ill health. I would hope their contributions continue to be acknowledged and not forgotten. The world needs more people like Ron and Mavis.
