To the editor:

I am writing this letter in support of the seniors corner at the Skeena Mall.

I understand that there seems to be an issue with the Skeena Mall management who have determined that the new community support centre, the seniors corner, has failed to meet the mall standards and have deemed the seniors corner a thrift store.

I attended high school, worked in the community, and have relatives who lived and worked for many years in Terrace. Although I do not live in Terrace currently, I have supported my senior relatives’ transition to senior living.

During my last visit to Terrace in June I visited the Skeena Mall and was delighted to see the new seniors corner.

My husband and I, both seniors now, browsed the shop and was delighted with its offerings.

There was little to no mall traffic except in the Seniors Corner as many seniors were sitting, talking, browsing, or having a cup of coffee.

The staff was very welcoming, the vintage merchandise displayed professionally, and the availability of resources and information timely.

The corner accepts donations likely from seniors who are leaving their home of many years to assisted living or long-term care.

If you have ever tried to pack up and leave on short notice, with little energy or assistance this service is so valuable.

The idea that seniors can come to socialize have a cup of tea, to get out of the house for many that would otherwise be alone, this is so valuable.

I did not think for one minute that this was a thrift store as it offered so much more.

I hope the mall management could help re-merchandise or provide suggestions to meet their standards.
