I was extremely surprised to find an anti-abortion letter front and centre on The Terrace Standard website on Sept. 20.
I then read the other anti-abortion letter to the editor it was in response to. (I do understand these are letters of opinion and not fact-checked journalism).
There are a lot of things I could say to refute the incorrect and alarming contents of both letters. Actual facts about the availability and efficacy of birth control, stories about abused children, much-wanted unviable pregnancies, and preeclampsia.
But the question that stands out to me the most is: why is the paper, and by extension Black Press Media, choosing to publish and promote anti-abortion letters?
Why amplify views that completely disregard the complete human beings that carry pregnancies?
I don’t know if the goal is more click-throughs or if the bosses at Black Press are pushing this decision. But I do know that abortion is important medical care and if people don’t like abortion, they don’t have have to have one.
And finally, it is worrying, given who the new leader of the Conservative party is, that letters like these are being amplified by the media.
Many people worked hard to decriminalize abortion, and Canadians have the right to bodily autonomy and to not be pregnant if they don’t want to be. Let’s not entertain regression.
