Action now needed on city council, school board

To the editor: A laudable accomplishment indeed by Terrace city council and, by extension, the City of Terrace on the return of the Talking Sticks to their rightful owners.

Terrace mayor Sean Bujtas, center and holding photo, stands with members of the Dzawada'enuxw First Nation of Kingcome Inlet on the mid-coast of British Columbia on Oct. 3, 2024. He was there to return two talking sticks. See story Page 2.

To the editor:

A laudable accomplishment indeed by Terrace city council and, by extension, the City of Terrace on the return of the Talking Sticks to their rightful owners.
That's despite having taken only 59 years (and a brief period of seven years between an actual suggestion they should be returned and a 'chance encounter' with the owners leading to their actual return).
But never mind, the deed is done. And it represents a very honourable step toward righting past wrongs.
Perhaps Terrace will now seize upon the impetus of the goodwill generated and see fit to genuinely encourage aboriginal representation on both city council and the school board.
It is my hope that some at least realize these lengthy timelines are inappropriate and in fact adversely affect our attempts at reconciliation.
We can, and must, do better. And in a timely manner. One can hope.
