SHANTELLE MCLEAN and Mayor Dave Pernarowski cut the cake to kick off Heritage Week celebrations at the Skeena Mall community room earlier today.

PHOTOS, NEWSPAPER clippings and other artifacts of the city's history went on display at the community room in the Skeena Mall today for the kickoff of Heritage Week and the city's town site celebration.

"A Little Town Site, A Big Celebration” begins the recognition of the 100 year celebration of the Terrace town site plan with long-time city residents on hand, some of whom spoke of their experiences here.

Long-time Terrace residents included Marion Clift, widow of Ev Clift who started Ev's Men's Wear, and who will turn 98 in March; 97-year-old Norman Stewart, who is A&W owner Campbell Stewart's father, who told some details of the hard work he put in as a surveyor for the provincial and "dominion" government over the years; Julia Little, daughter-in-law of city founder George Little; city freeman Bill McRae and his wife Helene; and Otto Lindstrom, whose parents were one of the early pioneer families here.

Also on hand was Shantelle McLean, who will be part of the upcoming Miss Teen BC-World pageant in March in Vancouver to compete for a spot in the the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant in Toronto later this year.

And Maggy Ottenbreit sang a locally written song about Terrace.

Mayor Dave Pernarowski and McLean, whose 15th birthday is today, cut the cake.

The celebration continues with heritage displays at the mall every day until Friday Feb. 25 along with entertainment, movies and something of interest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Tuesday, Terraceview Lodge residents will be treated to a Heritage Tea at the George Little House.

On Saturday, the Terrace Regional Historical Society will put on a display of family artifacts and histories, with the theme “Bridging the Generations”, bringing together young and old, and conserving this area’s history at the Happy Gang Centre from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tea and cookies will be served. Any donations given at the door will be given to the Happy Gang for renovations on the building.

Celebration events will continue throughout the year.
