Residents will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War Sunday

One hundred years ago — on the 11th eleventh hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month — the guns of the First World War fell silent.

The centennial anniversary of Remembrance Day is this Sunday, Nov. 11 and residents in the area will be marking the day with local ceremonies.

As a Commonwealth nation, Remembrance Day in Canada commemorates its members of the armed forces who served their country and those who have died in the line of duty. They have been memorialized on this date to signify the end of WWI.

Remembrance Day ceremony in Terrace:

Nov. 10:

• No Stone Left Alone: A candlelight vigil to honour veterans will start at the Kitsumgallum Cemetery, 101 Kalum Lake Road, at 6 p.m., moving to the Municipal Cemetery, 238 Kalum Lake Road for 6:30 p.m. before ending at the Cenotaph at City Hall, 3215 Eby St. for 7 p.m.

Nov. 11:

10:15 a.m

• Parade forms at the Safeway Parking Lot, led by parade marshall Comrade Brian Kirkaldy and Sgt. at Arms Comrade Patrick Smith

10:25 a.m.

• Parade marches to Tillicum Theatre, 4720 Lakelse Ave

10:54 a.m.

• Opening prayer with Salvation Army Lt. Rick Apperson

10:56 a.m.

• Singing of‘O Canada’

10:58 a.m.

• Hymn “Abide with Me”

11:00 a.m.

Silence for two minutes

An act of remembrance message will be delivered by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 President Cmde Agnes Taylor, followed by two hymns.

Cenotaph service:

Afterwards, the parade will reform in front of the Tillicum Twin Theatres and proceed down Lakelse Ave. to the Cenotaph for the laying of the wreaths. President of Branch 13, Cde. Agnes Taylor and Veteran Cde. Harold Wyatt will take the salute on route to the Cenotaph at City Hall where the wreaths will be laid.

Salvation Army Lt. Rick Apperson will lead the opening and closing prayers.

Afterwards, the parade will return to the Safeway Parking Lot.

Pipers across Terrace will be paying tribute to the 100th-anniversary signing of the Armistice of Compiègne as part of an international commemoration set for Nov. 11 at 6 a.m.

• Bells of Peace Project

Mark the centennial anniversary of the end of the First World War by joining the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 as they ring bells 100 times at sunset. Bells will be available for those who wish to participate but don’t have a bell. Participants are asked to arrive at 4425 Legion Ave. by 4 p.m.

5:00 p.m.

• Remembrance Day Dinner at the Legion. Tickets $15.

For those who are unable to attend Terrace’s Remembrance Day services at the Tillicum Twin Theatres, they can still watch the services by tuning in live on CityWest Channel 10 starting at 10:30 a.m.
