FORMER MAYORS and their family members came out to unveil a plaque dedicated to past Terrace mayors at city hall Oct. 21.
Despite the rain, a group came out to see the new plaque on a large rock in front of city hall and hear about those who sat in the mayor’s seat.
Past mayors Helmut Giesbrecht, Dave Maroney and Jack Talstra were on hand to unveil the plaque on the large rock in front of city hall. It has all the former mayors’ names and dates that they served going back to 1927.
“We felt it was important to say thank you to all those men that contributed their valuable time in helping to make Terrace [what it is] today,” said Little Town Site Big Celebration committee member Yvonne Moen.
About 20 years ago, Terrace Beautification, under then-president George Clark, placed about 170 concrete flowering tubs around the downtown, said Moen. These flower tubs were sponsored by local individuals or businesses, and the City of Terrace sponsored 15 of them for all the former mayors, she said.
A few years ago, the beautification society decided they tubs were beginning to look unsightly and they needed to go, added Moen.
The plaques on each tub had been removed with the idea to have them placed somewhere else, but the City decided to have one plaque, said Moen.
On hand from the former mayors’ and councillors’ families were Wilf Haugland, son of Emil Haugland, Duncan Kerr’s daughter Flora Kelly, Lloyd Johnstone’s daughter Marilyn McLeod, Rich McDaniel’s wife Lois and son Rick, Ev Clift’s daughter Sally, and Sid Mills whose father Parker was a former councillor and whose grandparents were Dr. and Mrs. Mills.
Members of the Little Town Site Big Celebration committee, city staff, and current mayor Dave Pernarowski were on hand as was city freemen Bill and Helene McRae, and Terrace founder George Little’s daughter-in-law Julia Little.
