DARYN Forsyth from New Hazelton is one of several people from the northwest serving onboard the HMCS Vancouver.

He's a marine engineering mechanic and carries the rank of ordinary seaman and is shown here examining fuel oil moving through a centrifugal pump.

A graduate of Hazelton Secondary School graduate he is the son of Heather and Graham Forsyth.

Forsyth joined the navy in 2008 after attending the Raven program for aboriginal youth.

Forsyth completed his training at Canadian Forces Fleet School (Esquimalt) and was posted to the Pacific Fleet.

HMCS Vancouver participated in the exercise with U.S. Navy submarines off the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean Feb. 12 to 21.

Other Canadian ships on the exercise were another frigage, HMCS Winnipeg, and a supply ship, HMCS Protecteur.
